Wheeler draglines

Your Sand & Gravel Specialists!

Wheeler Draglines has been producing quality machines for over fifteen years.

Wheeler manufactures five, eight and ten cubic yard custom skyline excavators. Our machines are well received by crews working in sand and gravel deposits that are below grade because of the production capability and ease of use.

Our specialized and high production machines use mechanical interlock, providing increased, efficiency, speed and better fuel consumption.

We re-manufacture these machines with electronic cabs, fully customized for a niche market. Our machines are all fitted with a Tier 4 Cummins engine.

Every pit is different in terms of layout, materials and obstacles. Our machines have the flexibility to adapt to the circumstances of the pit and makes our machines that much more unique in terms of adaptability.

5 Cubic Yard System

The Wheeler Model 108 gravel yarder offers strength, power and reliability plus speed and efficiency possible only with hydraulic interlocking design. This model is a tower yarder with two skylines equipped with a cable raise on the boom and outfitted with a main drum, skyline drum and haulback drum.

Haulback and Main Drums are fully interlocking allowing the operator to maintain perfect control of both main and haulback drums at full power in any of the 4 variable speeds, forward and reverse, without the use of brakes or power consuming slipping devices. The 108 gravel yarder is powered by a Cummins Tier 4 engine and Twin Disk Transmission with a Washington Undercarriage.

8 Cubic Yard System

The Wheeler Model 158 gravel yarder offers strength, power and reliability plus speed and efficiency possible only with mechanical interlocking design. This model is a large free-standing, self supporting tower yarder equipped with a hydraulic raise on the tower and outfitted with a main drum, skyline drum and haulback drum.

Haulback and Main Drums are fully mechanically interlocked allowing the operator to maintain perfect control of both main and haulback drums at full power in any of the 4 variable speeds, forward and reverse, with the use of slipping clutches. The 158 gravel yarder is powered by a Cummins Tier IV 375 HP engine and a 4 speed, full reversing Clark 5000 Series Transmission and Clark 8000 Series Torque Converter.

10 Cubic Yard System

The Wheeler Model 208 gravel yarder offers strength, power and reliability plus speed and efficiency possible only with interlocking design. This model is a large free-standing, self supporting tower yarder equipped with a hydraulic raise on the tower and outfitted with a main drum, skyline drum and haulback drum.

Haulback and Main Drums are fully mechanically interlocked allowing the operator to maintain perfect control of both main and haulback drums at full power in any of the 4 variable speeds, forward and reverse, with the use of slipping devices. The 208 gravel yarder is powered by a Cummins Tier IV 450 HP engine and a 4 speed, full reversing Clark 8000 Series Transmission and Clark 16000 Series Torque Converter.

“There is no other system on the market that is as easy to move around the pit. This increases our productivity.”

Industry Legends Cross Paths

The meeting that was meant to be.

Ray Gagne and his team were searching for an economical and viable solution to the challenge of extracting gravel from their wet pits in Manitoba. Their existing systems which involved using floating conveyors and long reach excavators mounted on barges were extremely expensive and required constant attention and maintenance.

Ray was familiar with Sauerman (winches and hoists) that were already being used in wet pits and thought that adapting a Logging Yarder to Gravel operations might be exactly the option they were after.

After months of research and scouting for a reliable solution, Ray decided that an Interlock Yarder integrated with a Sauermans would make the most sense for his operations. Ray soon connected with Stu Wheeler Sr. of Wheeler Equipment. Stu’s lifelong knowledge of Washington Yarders and Yarders in general was the missing piece of Ray’s puzzle.

Ray and Stu Sr went to work. Rays company Nelson River Construction, began buying up old Washington 108’s, 137’s, 217’s, 158’s and 208’s. With some repurposing ingenuity and industry leading engineering chops these soon to be remanufactured machines evolved from old school logging yarders into purpose built high production gravel movers now known as Skyline Excavators.

Unfortunately, Ray passed away in 2022. However his knowledge of the gravel industry, along with his passion to innovate and his dedication to the industry will be sorely missed. They just don’t make ’em like Ray any more.

The Purpose built Wheeler 208 is a result of almost 20 years of dreaming, tinkering and engineering prowess by the once unlikely duo of Stu Sr and Ray Gagne. Many people people in the gravel industry have been impacted by their drive and determination.
